Peds BBQ 2015

Friday should have been a fun start to the summer, however we were hosting a BBQ on Saturday so we ended up doing a lot of work inside and outside. Lots of weeding, and cleaning up etc. David had been invited over to Tae's house. He'd been home schooled for the last  6 weeks or so, so David hadn't seen him in a while, and Tae was pretty lonely. So David was over there for about 4 hours, and Crystal brought him home just after I got Melanie down for a nap. Honestly I can't remember what else we did that day. I'm sure we didn't just work the entire day. I think we ran to the store for a few things, after dropping David off, but that's all I can think of.

Saturday morning we finished up with last minute stuff. Amy had been invited to a birthday party for Kameryn, so she quickly ate a hamburger before Elizabeth came to pick her up. Amy was really excited. They went to an aquatic center (glorified pool) about 30 minutes away. I put sun block on her before she left, but told her she needed to reapply. I even told Elizabeth, but either it didn't happen, or happened too late, because she got a little burned, especially on her ears, and a little on her arms and back. So Amy didn't join in the annual Pediatrics Department BBQ.

Amanda had brought these adorable props for pictures. Melanie liked the tiara and star balloon.

Timothy rocked the mustache, pink zebra hat and money sign glasses.

Some of the guests were interested in picking raspberries and strawberries after I showed them where they could find them. They also found the cherries, which were ripe, but I warned them about the worms. We had lots of delicious food to choose from. Besides the hot dogs and hamburgers we provided, people brought a variety of salads, watermelon, mango salsa, homemade horchata with lime, and salted caramel cheesecake for dessert. The kids had fun swimming, and David filled up several water balloons, and with adult supervision launched them.

Timothy also had fun with the dinosaur hat

I decided against putting Melanie down for a nap. I knew she wouldn't want to miss out on the fun, and she had a blast. Aaron got out the boomerang that William W* had made for us back in Texas. They had fun with that too. Several people stayed to help clean up and the last guest left around 4:00.

We didn't really eat dinner as we were too full after eating for 3 hours. We snacked on left over salads and horchata. I was beginning to wonder when Amy was coming home when I got a text from Elizabeth asking if it was OK for them to stay longer since everyone was having fun and getting along. So Amy had fun at a really long party. She got home about the time our home teacher came over. We had a great visit and then it was time for baths and bed. We were exhausted!

Sunday Aaron had another early meeting at the church, and we made it there just fine. It was a missionary homecoming Sunday. Not only did we get to hear from Troy D* who recently returned from New Zealand, but Oliver A* was in town and got to report on his mission to Oklahoma. They moved out of the ward a few months before he left on his mission. He returned in March. However when Aaron heard he was going to be in town he asked if he would speak in church. Originally it was going to be just him, but then his whole family got to come as well. It was a great sacrament meeting.

I got to enjoy Sunday School, and instead of teaching a lesson in Young Women's class, we watched the second half of the Face2Face interview with Elder and Sister Bednar. We had time for some discussion afterward, which went pretty well.

We had signed up to feed the missionaries, but we had to do it early enough so we could make it to the Bishop's Youth Discussion. The missionaries made it there before Aaron. We had new potatoes and peas fresh from the garden!  Delicious!
I had shelled enough peas to get 2 cups of peas!

We also grilled up some hamburgers and hot dogs since we had some left over. So after an early dinner, we went over to the church for the evening. Troy and Oliver were presenting more about their missions and also answered questions. The kids enjoyed it, but Melanie had a hard time sitting still. Afterward we served ice cream and cookies, and milk. Melanie was doing pretty well, but then spilled her milk toward the end of the evening. We cleaned up and headed home. It was already bed time.

Last Days of School

Monday morning I got up early, or rather, showered as soon as I got up rather than lay in bed and try to go back to sleep, or go downstairs to start breakfast. I knew it was going to be a busy day. We had scriptures, and breakfast, sent Aaron off to work, and then Julianna dropped off Timothy. I had to do some shopping in the city. I didn't get out as soon as I wanted to because of an uncooperative 2 1/2 year old. Eventually we were on our way. I have to say I got several looks and a couple of comments pushing around a 31 month old, and a 17 month old, and being 20 weeks pregnant. However no one was rude, thank goodness. I was hoping to leave early enough that they would both fall asleep on the way home, but Timothy fell asleep in between stores, and woke up as soon as I opened the van door. Then they both fell asleep on the way home, but didn't stay asleep. We only had an hour until we had to be at Amy's school, so I fed them lunch, and unloaded groceries.

Then we headed over to the school for the Kindergarten parade. It was hot. It hadn't hit 100 yet, but it was close. I put sunscreen on all of us, and parked across the street because there were no spots left in the parking lot. It took me a couple of minutes to get Timothy's stroller open. The only problem with the stroller was the stairs. The only other way up was to walk a block to the parking lot entrance and then back to the front of the school. So I opted to carry the stroller up the stairs. We found a spot in the shade, but it was still super hot! I talked with Becky G*. Poor Dani had been sick, and missed the Student of the Month field trip earlier that morning. Amy was able to go. They went to a gymnastics place that has a play area with lots of foam and ball pits, slides and tunnels etc. Anyway... Becky had brought Dani to the school just for the parade. Rather than do a long graduation ceremony, they have the kids do a short parade, and then hand out certificates in each individual class. Much faster, and better, if it weren't for the heat!

Here comes Amy's class, some were blowing bubbles and chanting "Kindergarten Rocks!"

There's Amy
After the short parade we had to climb back up the stairs and pile into the classroom. Mrs. W* then announced each student and gave them a graduation certificate.
She asked for a hug or a handshake
Amy hugged her, but moved before I could snap a picture.
Afterward we walked back to the van, and carried the stroller down the stairs one last time. Then headed home. Melanie and Timothy were pretty tired. Timothy fell asleep on the way home, and I didn't have the heart to wake him up. It was too hot to leave him in the garage, so I wrapped him up in his blanket and got him back to sleep on the couch downstairs where it was cool and dark. Julianna arrived just 15 minutes later, so we chatted for a bit until the kids were almost home, then she woke Timothy up and went home, and I got the kids in the van and we headed out to (my) Timothy's last drama class. On the way there I watched the temperature climb.
It reached 105, but by the time I parked at his class it was back down to 104.

It was too hot to play outside so we spent most of the class inside. David had stayed home, but the girls and I played until Timothy's class was done. On the was home it hit 105 again, so I snapped a picture as we were on the gravel road and almost home.
Yikes!

I had asked David to cook up some bacon for dinner. We had turkey bacon ranch wraps for dinner. An easy, no cook meal (well, except for the bacon), so we don't have to heat up the house. I can't recall what else we did that evening. Probably a game or some other sort of family activity.

Tuesday was field day for Timothy, and he had lots of fun. I can't recall the details, but Timothy I* spent another day with us. I don't think we did much outside - it was too hot, so it was mostly stay inside and play, eat, and nap. When the kids got home we changed quickly into swim suits and cooled off in the pool!
I did pick a few ripe raspberries - first of the season
That evening I also shelled some peas and got 1/2 cup
And Aaron picked a few cherries
Unfortunately none of the trees were sprayed this year, and almost every cherry had worms in it. We may have to spray next year.

Wednesday was the last day of school, so I had to take some obligatory traditional last day of school pictures. David was ready and willing.

Amy didn't want me to take a picture of her
Melanie wanted one of her on the stairs, upside down

 Timothy was finally ready
So we took some group shots. David wanted to hold baby Timothy

and yes Melanie was still in her pajamas

Then I told everyone to go inside and Amy started crying. "But you didn't get my picture yet." She had refused earlier, so I figured she didn't want one at all. So I tried to calm her down and take a picture, but this was the best I got before we had to rush and get into the van.
It was another day spent at home with baby Timothy and Melanie. I did some weeding down by the pumpkins. Melanie was inside watching Blue's Clues, and Timothy was out with me. But he kept eating dirt, and trying to run down the hill into the road, luckily it's not very busy and I think only 1 or 2 cars passed while were were out there, but I still tried to keep him on the hill with me. I was excited to see some of the pumpkins flowering.

I had intended to bake some cookies for the last day of school, but never really got around to it. The kids were excited to come home and tell me all about their day. Amy had field day, and really enjoyed it. It was fun to hear their stories. Amy had asked about how to keep in touch with some of her friends over the summer, so I wrote down our phone number a couple of times, and she gave them to her friends that I didn't know how to contact. The kids were excited to go swimming again. Julianna and Timothy joined us. They had brought a baby float toy, and Melanie loved it! So they had to take turns using it.

That night there was scouts and Aaron was doing the CPR certification for girls camp at the other local church building. So he headed out there early. I can't recall anything else out of the ordinary.

Thursday was the first day of summer break for the kids. I still had Timothy for one more day. I was doing some more weeding outside in the morning, but Timothy didn't want to stay near me. He kept going over by Max, and then climbing up the stairs to the back porch. I would have to run over there, and make sure he didn't fall down them. Eventually David took him inside and watched him while I finished up.

Julianna had a half day for her last day of school (and job). She is officially a stay-at-home mom now! She picked up Timothy just after lunch. I put Melanie down for a nap soon after that. I ran an errand to bank while she slept. It was nice to have David home so I could do that.

Since I hadn't made cookies the day before David asked if he could make some cookies. I consented and he found a fun recipe for marshmallow cloud cookies. He baked the last of the dough into a couple of huge cookies.
Obviously we went swimming that afternoon as well.
That evening there was an Elder's Quorum BBQ. Aaron wasn't able to make it as he ended up making some visits that night. I enjoyed talking to different people, and the kids had fun, but eventually I had to pull them away to get ready for bed.
I took a few pictures for Joan (the ward historian) since she wasn't able to make it.
It was fun to see Tamera and Benjamin A* who were visiting for a few days. And MaryLynn B* who is finishing up her cancer treatment, and was feeling well enough to get out for a bit.

End of the Year Play

Saturday was busy of course. We had to hurry and get chores done so we could make it to Timothy's drama performance on time. It worked out perfectly that there were two performances. One at 10:30, and one at 12:00. Timothy had to be there at 10:00, so we got there early and snagged a good seat. Aaron didn't come with us so he could attend one more high school graduation. The 5th graduate from our ward goes to a different school, and it turns out she was the class president, I didn't know that.

The performance lasted about an hour. There are two drama classes. The first one did a 20 minute play. The second class divided into two groups and did two 15 minute plays. Timothy was in the last group. So he sat with us until it was his turn. It was fun to watch. I have a clip and some pictures. It turns out sitting in the front row didn't allow for a good vantage point for pictures.

This is where Mr. Moneybags tells the hero of the melodrama that he should be suspicious of the villain.
Timothy stayed after the first performance to eat lunch and get ready for the next performance. Aaron was on his way up about the time we left. He made it in time for the show at 12:00. We got home in time for lunch, although Melanie had fallen asleep, and then woke up when I tried to take her to her bed. A 10 minute nap is not nearly enough. I can't remember whether or not I got in a nap that afternoon. However we did get some work done around the house. The kids really wanted to go swimming, but they didn't finish soon enough for me and Aaron to get in the pool and still be ready in time to leave. So they got about 30 minutes in the pool while I snapped asparagus for the pot luck. We drove back up to the city for a BBQ. Melanie fell asleep on the way as I suspected she would. Brian U* hosted the farewell BBQ for Bhabi and Bimla. Bimla was starting her residency in New Jersey, so they were moving. Bhabi had just signed on a new job there in New Jersey. So we had to say goodbye to their family. Victoria and Andy were there along with Amanda L*, and Eric, B*. Brian grilled up some bratwursts, and we had fresh squeezed orange juice with club soda, some salad, our grilled asparagus, and a veggie tray. It was rather hot outside so we stayed indoors. I also didn't take any pictures. We didn't get to stay for long. There was a baptism that evening. So we drove back and dropped Aaron off at the church, then I took the kids home to get ready for bed. Aaron texted when he was ready to come home. I had just put the kids in bed so I drove over. He brought home some leftover cupcakes.

Sunday was busy as well. Aaron had an early meeting at the church, and then we arrived on time. I don't remember much else other than Troy D* had returned from his mission in New Zealand, so everyone was excited to see him. He was able to speak a little as he shared his testimony during Sacrament meeting. Timothy also bore his testimony. I love when he does that because it is simple truth, and it comes from his heart, what he truly believes, not just something he memorized. I enjoyed the other testimonies as well. Then we were off to Sunday School. Young Women's class was fun. We got to watch part of the Face2Face interview with Elder and Sister Bednar.

After church the girls and I ate a quick lunch, and then I put Melanie down for a nap. I probably napped too. I can't recall exactly what we did for dinner that night. Or anything else for that matter. I know Aaron had something that night, and ended up coming home pretty late, but that's it.
