Interview trip #3

This weekend we took another trip. We left Thursday immediately after picking up David from school. I drove since Aaron was post call and very tired after taking the interpreter test before coming home to sleep for a few hours. We made pretty good time (no car sickness) and arrived at the hotel around 6:00. It was the same hotel we had stayed in the previous weekend. Same city, different clinic. This clinic is actually in the city. We didn't get the large suite, but a regular room with 2 Queen beds. However they paid for the breakfast buffet, and left a nice gift basket with some of the same things we had gotten the week before. I apologize now because I forgot to pack the camera, so I have no pictures, unless I can figure out how to get them off Aaron's phone. After we checked in we ate dinner and watched some TV. Aaron went downstairs to print a few things while I put the kids to bed. Amy didn't like that one bit. But eventually she fell asleep, and sleep pretty well that night.

We all enjoyed the yummy breakfast buffet. Then we dropped Aaron off at the clinic and we went to check out some schools. I had an appointment at 10:00 at a school in a town just North of the city. Since we had some time I drove to another school in a good neighborhood in town. On the way there I found a Goodwill, so I decided to go there first. We found jeans for David and me, a dress for Amy, and some books. We barely had enough time to drive by the school and then head up north. Amy didn't get much a of a nap, just the 15 minutes it took to drive there. We had a look around the two elementary schools. The kids of course just wanted to play on the playgrounds. And Amy didn't want me to carry her, but she was either walking too slow, or going the wrong direction. By the time we were done I was exhausted. So we headed back to the hotel.

The boys told me they were tired of sandwiches, so we just had fruit, and snacks. Since Amy didn't get much of a morning nap, I put her down early for her afternoon nap. So we all read books, then the boys watched a movie while I was on the computer. Amy woke up after an hour. I gave her a pretzel to eat, and snuggled with her on the bed, and she fell asleep again for another 45 minutes. Before we knew it, it was time to pick up Aaron. We had about 2 hours before dinner, so we headed to a place Aaron had heard about. An indoor playarea, run by a gymnastics company. It reminds me of Discovery Zone - a place that was in my hometown. The boys ran around for an hour. They loved it. They definitely expended a lot of engery. Amy loved it too.

The best part of the dinner in the evening was that they provided a babysitter for the kids. I hesitated leaving Amy with a teenager, in a hotel room with not much to distract her. So we decided to take Amy with us, mostly because she was already being clingy even before the babysitter arrived. Amy did not want to be strapped into the high chair. She only wanted me to hold her and to play with the silverware. Luckily we were in a back room, so we closed the door and let her run around. Even though she had eaten at the hotel she continued to eat at the restaurant - grapes, cheese, the pasta, crackers, etc. Some one commented that the more expensive the restaurant the longer it takes for the food to get there. It certainly seemed to take a while before we had orders taken, and food started arriving. But that gave us plenty of time to talk. One of Aaron's fellow residents was there doing her rural clinic month (like we did in ID last summer). It was about 8:00 when the main course arrived. We ordered dessert even though it was late. Aaron and I were going to share, but I'm glad we ordered seperately, because the portions were very small. Amy was really getting tired, and eventually she dozed off. It was almost 10:00 by the time we left!!!

The boys had fun with the babysitter, she bought them sodas from the vending machine. They were pretty tired, and went to bed pretty easily, Amy on the other hand was so exhausted she couldn't put herself to sleep. She basically slept with me the whole night, and was up often.

Another great breakfast greeted us in the morning. We had scheduled a tour with a realtor at 10:00 am after an HR meeting for Aaron. We were very happy that one of the physicians (Dave) and his wife (Shannon) offered to watch the kids for us while we did that tour. They are LDS and have 4 kids of their own. So after we dropped off Aaron at his HR meeting, I drove the kids out to the farm where Dr. C* grew up. They live in his parents house for now since they (his parents) are leaving on a mission this week. They had a lot of fun. Amy did fine, but wouldn't take a nap in the crib. She did fall asleep for 30 minutes in Shannon's arms. That seems pretty typical of Amy. The realtor tour was good. We got to see the neighborhood we'd like to live in if we decide to live there. She took us into 4 homes, and there is quite a range (size and cost). It still doesn't seem real that we are close to being done, and that we could be buying a house in the next year or two.

After we were done with the realtor we picked up the kids, and headed home. As soon as we were on the road I had to call to find out the score of the BYU game, and was pleased to hear we were winning 45-0 in the 4th quarter. The Cougars ended up crushing the Cowboys 52-0!!! Woohoo! The drive home was good. Both Amy and Timothy slept for a while, Aaron and I got to talk about a lot of things, and then we hit the pass - it was snowing! It wasn't too bad, but it did stick on the road for a bit.

It was raining when we got home so we quickly unpacked the van, and sat around the house for a while before I made dinner. Then Aaron was off to the ER for another night shift. It's been a whilrwind of a weekend. This morning I found out the bishop of our previous ward (here in WA) was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Apparently he had surgery this week, and is recovering well. Hopefully that is the last we'll have to hear about his cancer, things are looking promising. I don't know much else. After church we had dinner and then drove Aaron to the airport for another interview. We could have driven there in 4 hours, but decided not to have the kids miss more school right now, and the pass is a little unpredictable right now. Unfortunately we could have driven there faster since the flight was delayed 90 minutes, and then the propeller broke, so he's still sitting at the airport. I hope his sleep deprived interview goes well tomorrow.

So that about sums it up. More tomorrow.

Interview trip #2

It was nice to just drive straight there, no stops. It was raining a lot, so I took it pretty slow. We checked into the hotel at about 7:00. The kids were very excited. The first thing I thought was where is the bed?
Oh it's in the next room
King size? Woohoo!

And our room had it's own bathroom with a jacuzzi tub!

And the clinic left us a nice gift basket full of nuts and berries, pretzels and soda etc. I was really feeling spoiled. They brought in a crib for Amy soon after we arrived.

Notice in the first picture the kids had already pulled the cushions off the sofa bed? It was hard to get them to sleep of course, but at least Aaron had another room where he could work on the laptop and make phone calls while I tried to get the kids to sleep. Amy would not go to sleep, mostly because she took a late nap on the way there. I eventually nursed her - she still has not given up her bedtime feeding. However she woke several more times that night and I could not calm her except by nursing, we were not about to let her cry it out with other hotel guest around us. It was a long night. One good thing about a King size bed is there was plenty of room for her in our bed.

No breakfast was served at the hotel (unless you wanted to pay $11.95 for the buffet), so we had instant oatmeal and cereal, at least we had a microwave. We had to head out pretty early to get Aaron to the clinic at 8:00 - the hotel was about 25 minutes from the clinic, and we were driving into the sun. After we dropped off Aaron we met up with a couple to tour a small town we could live in. By small I mean about 3, 000 people. Someone gave us his name saying he worked for the schools and was LDS. Turns out he's the assistant principal and athletic director at the high school, and the football coach, and the bishop of the ward. He and his wife gladly showed us around the little town, we visited all the schools. We walked around the elementary school, and drove by the rest along with a few homes that were for sale.

On the way back to the hotel I checked out the local Target. At the hotel, the boys watched TV, while I checked email etc. Then we went to the pool. It was fun, but I realized I couldn't really play with the boys because I had to hold Amy the whole time. Then we had some lunch. We also walked over to the library a couple blocks away, but we didn't stay long. Amy was really tired, but we were planning to go out with the real estate agent (Alice) at 2:15. So I kept her up, but she couldn't last. She fell asleep at 1:50. She stayed asleep until I had to help Timothy pull his seat out of the van. We drove to the clinic to pick up Aaron. Alice then proceeded to show us around the little town I had looked at earlier. She also drove us through another little town and the outskirts of the nearby city. The kids were getting a little restless. Aaron and I switched seats so I could sit with Amy. As we drove past the hotel we wondered how much longer we were going to drive around. Alice had a lot of great information, but I really wished we had not brought the kids when they started fighting in the back seat, and David starting chanting "Boring, Boring, Boring." Finally we were back at the hotel with only about 20 minutes to spare before we had to leave for the dinner. Amy had fallen asleep again, and I was able to reinstall her carseat in the van with out waking her up. Aaron took the boys up to change clothes and grab a few things for me.

We got to the restaurant on time. It was a great evening. The atmosphere was loud and there was a kids' menu. The table was covered with butcher paper and the kids got crayons so they could draw on the table. Aaron had printed some fall dot-to-dots, coloring pages, mazes, word searches etc. That kept the kids occupied for a while. Amy was doing a great job eating her pasta, until the boys' pizza arrived. Then she wanted only what was on Timothy's plate. I was able to talk with most of the other physicians, and really enjoyed finding out more about the towns. Toward the end Amy was a little cranky. She had a messy diaper, and didn't want to get back in her high chair when I returned from the bathroom. She also dropped an almost full cup of lemonade on the floor. I then discovered she had been throwing most of her food on the floor rather than eating it like I had thought. She made such a mess. The boys were so good, so we decided to stay for dessert, and I just wandered around outside with Amy, and Aaron called me when it was ready. We shared a gelato - yum!

That night went much better. It was a little late, but the boys went right to sleep. Amy slept much better too. She woke a few times, but it was easy to put her back to sleep. It was great to sleep in until 7:15!!! The boys were up at about 6:45, but they played quietly in the other room, so we could sleep a little longer. After breakfast we packed up. We had discovered that the library was having their booksale at 10:00am. So we went over to stand in line at 9:30 - there was only people in front of us :) Nothing like the booksale I'm used to here. There were about 15 tables full of books - not like the airplane hanger full I'm used to here. But the books were only 50 cents a piece!!!

We then headed over to a pumpkin patch.

Timothy is the only one who would pose here.

They liked the little hay maze.
They posed on the hay bales with the pumpkins.
Then we got to make our our cider.
We picked out different varieties of apples, Asian pears and pears.

Then we washed them.

Then poured them into the chopper

Then we squeezed out the good stuff with the press.

Then they bottled it up for us, and let us saple what was left - Mmmmm!

With our fresh apple cider in the cooler we headed over to a park. We played for a bit even though it was really windy. After some lunch we headed home. It was a quick drive back to the city, but we decided to stop by Target to get my Rx, and it took forever to get to the parking garage, and eventually I jumped out and got the Rx while Aaron drove through the parking garage. We had about an hour to get the boys into their Halloween costumes. We had fun trick-or-treating, and drinking hot apple cider, and eating onion rings (Shari you were right on with you guess, but I was trying to avoid publishing the names of the cities - I'm kinda paranoid like that). The only sad part was losing one of Amy's pretty white shoes while trick-or-treating at the shopping center.

Trying to catch up our trips has put me behind in posting about this week. I'll have to play catch up again later.

addendum

A few things I forgot about our first interview trip.

  • I lost the room key on our walk around downtown. It fell out of my back pocket, so I thought I put it in the diaper bag, but later I couldn't find it. So I had to get a new one. I found it a few days later in the diaper bag where I usually put the binky and the carmex.
  • I lost Amy's binky as we were checking out of the hotel. Aaron packed up the van before we took him back to the clinic. We went back to the hotel for about an hour, and I know we had it then. When we did a last run through and packed the remaining things I couldn't find the binky anywhere. We even went back to the empty hotel room. No luck. So we stopped by the grocery store to get another one. I still haven't found it.
  • We stopped by a Denny's on the way back home, for dinner - kids eat free on Tuesdays. I'm not sure it was worth it. The kids were so tired of sitting in the van, they were bouncing off the walls. Amy wouldn't eat anything, and didn't want to be in the high chair at all. She screamed when we put her back in the carseat.
  • I'm glad we don't have to make that drive again soon. Aaron was notified that the other clinic is not ready to open another position yet.

Pumpkin carving

When I woke up on Wednesday morning I realized we forgot to take the garbage to the curb. So I enlisted David's help and we got it out in time. I let Aaron let sleep and got the kids ready for school. Aaron woke up and we had breakfast. Aaron took the kids to school. I think most of the day was spent running errands, doing laundry and unpacking and repacking. It was an early release day at school. So we played, and raked leaves and had an early dinner. That evening we carved pumpkins, partly because we had no other time, and partly because carving them any earlier would result in moldy pumpkins by Halloween. I opted out of carving as I washed the dishes. We only got two pumpkins carved because Aaron had to go to scouts.

Thursday was another busy day. We dropped Aaron off at the Hospital so he could catch a shuttle downtown for the R3 retreat - they address all sorts of "life after residency" issues.
After I dropped the boys off at school I took Amy to co-op, and then went back home to get ready for our next adventure. I cleaned the house top to bottom, and finished packing. I left the downstairs to finish after I picked up kids. Amy did well at co-op, but she didn't take a nap because she had a messy diaper when the mom went to check on her. So after picking up Timothy, I finished getting the house ready, put Amy down for a nap, cleaned up the basement, packed the van, and tried not to forget anything. I was planning to make a trip to Target to pick up a Rx, but it wasn't ready yet. They were waiting for my dr.'s office to call back. I called the pharmacy Wednesday morning, but apparently I am supposed to give them 72 hrs notice for a new Rx. So it wasn't ready by the time I had to leave town. When I picked up David from school, we were ready to go, but still had some time before we needed to pick up Aaron. Eventually we picked up Aaron and headed out.

Interview trip #1

Last week was very busy. It started with Sunday morning. Aaron and I woke early to get ready. The kids got up around 6:30 and they got dressed and ate breakfast. We were out the door by 7:00 am. Amy took an early nap (8:30 am) but it didn't last long. About 2 hours into the drive Timothy's motion sickness appeared. We stopped soon after that. He had another incident about an hour later. Amy took another short nap. We arrived at our second stop around 11:00. We visited with a pediatrician who was in the same residency program as Aaron. He and Aaron had been in contact about positions open in the surrounding areas. We've learned that getting interviews has a lot to do with who you know. After a quick visit, some yummy pumpkin bread, and some drawing on the chalkboard wall, we headed out again. Next stop the church. We got there about 30 minutes early, so plenty of time to change the kids' clothes (Aaron and I were already dressed for church).

Church was good, it was a mission farewell, so pretty full congregation. Amy took another nap about 45 minutes into church. We found a few physicians in the ward and got some opinions on the two practices Aaron is looking at in that city (I'll give you a hint* where later). After church we checked into the hotel. Pretty typical of hotels we've stayed in before. Apparently it's a historic hotel, but we were in the newer wing, with smaller rooms. The kids were a little bored, so we put on a Veggie Tales movie for them. We fixed some dinner, and then just played.

One of the fun memories I have of this trip was that David decided to keep a journal of the trip. His teacher suggested it. Instead of writing down a few of the things we did, he wrote every detail. He even wanted to included when he went to the bathroom. I tried to convince him that it wasn't necessary to include that.

Aaron was trying to get a few things done on the laptop while the kids were supposed to be going to sleep. They weren't very quiet, so Aaron went down to the lobby, and I turned down the lights and it was much easier to get the kids to sleep. Well except for David who stayed awake anyway. Amy fell asleep fine, but she didn't stay asleep very well. She woke up several times, and it wasn't easy to get her back to sleep like I can do at home. It was a long night.

Monday morning we got up and got ready. We enjoyed the complimentary breakfast. Then took Aaron to his interview. I had run out of wipes with Timothy's motion sickness and Amy's two messy diapers, so we went to Wal-Mart. This town is pretty small, and really doesn't have many options in the way of shopping. No Target :(. I think there is a Macy's, but no JC Penney. So I figured we'd check out the Wal-Mart. It wasn't too bad as far as Wal-Marts go. When we got back Amy napped, and the boys watched some TV. When she woke up we went for a walked in the heart of the city. We visited the local candy shop - yum. The stopped by the Goodwill. I found a pair of kakhi's and a coat for David! Then we went to the library. We were there a little early. While we were waiting a family that we saw in church the day before arrived. So while the kids were playing and reading books in the library I got to pick their brains a little about the area, schools, wards, neighborhoods, etc. It was great.

It was getting late and I was getting hungry, so we headed back to the hotel, and two blocks away it started raining, hard. So we took cover at red lights and and ran the 2 blocks to the van. We drove around to another shopping center and got Burger King drive through. The kids love Burger King. Amy had her first chicken nugget. Then we drove back to the hotel and put Amy down for a nap. The boys read and drew and eventually watched some TV. Amy slept for quite a while. Aaron called at 3:15 - he was done. So we picked him up. We hung out at the hotel while Aaron worked on a few things, and the boys did some homework. The rain fizzled out and we decided to drive around for a while before dinner. We saw the local college campus, which was beautiful. But somehow we never took any pictures.

We arrived at the restaurant and realized it was pretty fancy, dim lighting, quiet atmosphere. Not exactly kid friendly. They didn't have a kid's menu. We ordered the mac and cheese appetizer for the boys. It didn't look anything like mac and cheese, so they didn't want it. Amy devoured it though. It was really good cheese. Aaron and I had some fancy Italian dinners - really good. I spent most of the time talking with a NP from the clinic, who is LDS. She had a lot of great things to say about the community and oportunitites for the kids e.g. music, sports, release-time seminary, etc. She also really entertained David, which was good because I had my hands full with Amy, and Timothy. The food was great - I really felt like I was being wined and dined. No alcohol was served of course, unless you count Timothy's dessert. No one else wanted dessert, but the boys did. David had the triple chocolate parfait, and Timothy had the chocolate torte. Timothy said he didn't like the raisins, so I tried one, and spit it out immediately -soaked in alcohol. I looked at the menu - dried cherries soaked in cabernet - lovely. It was a very long evening, but good for Aaron to talk to some of the physicians from the clinic.

The boys went to sleep a little better that night, and so did Amy, and consequently so did Aaron and I. But we did have to get up a little earlier so Aaron could be at the clinic at 8:00 am. After we dropped him off we drove around looking at schools, housing, and parks. There are good school, and lots of fun parks. Amy took a nap, but not a very good one. We stopped and played at a few parks. It was pretty cold, but the kids didn't care. It was also pretty wet because of the rain from the day before. We picked up Aaron around 11:00. We drove around again to show him some of the things we saw. Amy fell asleep again so we let the boys out to play at a park, and Aaron and I got to discuss the interview. Then we dropped him off at the other clinic for a 2 hour meeting, just to see if he wanted to interview there. I took the kids back to the park and we had lunch. At 1:00 we picked up Aaron and drove out to a produce stand we'd heard about and purchased some local onions *hint hint*, butternut squash and plums.

Then we headed back home. It was a very long drive, and Amy was tired of being strapped in. She screamed most of the last 90 minutes. We got home at 8:00 at night, very tired. We unloaded and went to bed.

Are you tired yet? Well hold on, we're only part way through.
